Annoying House Guests

We all love when friends or loved ones want to visit and check out our new digs.  “Sure, come stay for a few days,” you may say.

However, sometimes that two-day stay becomes a week or two. Or the days they visit become an absolute nightmare. Unfortunately, without boundaries, this will happen.

Communication is a must when it comes to houseguests. This will open the doors to setting boundaries and rules before an uncomfortable situation arises.

First step is to check with your roommate, if you have one, and ask them if it is okay if you have overnight guests and a timeframe that they are comfortable with the person staying in the apartment. This will avoid any potential arguments with the person who is paying the other half of the rent.

Second, when making plans with the guests, let them know how long is acceptable to stay with you and be upfront with your house rules, such as no smoking, or loud partying, washing your own dishes. Also, fill them in on any of the apartment complex’s rules, for example no swimming after 10 p.m.  When finalizing plans with your guests ask them what their expectations are, do they want to be picked up from the airport, do they want a tour of the city? How will your work schedule affect their stay?

Last, make your houseguest feel welcome. Have their resting place clean and made-up, have clean towels ready for them, and have their favorite snacks or drinks on-hand for them.

Being clear with your houseguest will prevent unnecessary stress and make their stay a lot more enjoyable.
